Brendletown Fire and Rescue is always accepting applications for members. We have a Junior Firefighter program that consists of 14 to 18 year old members who are enrolled in school and maintaining good grades. Members of Brendletown Fire and Rescue must live in the fire district or live within 5 miles of a district boundary. Applicants that live in district will have an advantage in the application process. The process for new members is listed below
Complete an Application- Applications can be obtained on Tuesday nights at 7pm during our regular meeting at station 1.
Chief will obtain a Criminal Records Check- No Applicant will be accepted with Felony charges or any other charges other than minor traffic offenses.
Driver's License Check- Each member must have a current North Carolina Drivers License to become and remain a member at the department. The Chief will evaluate driver's history in the application process.
Orientation Period- After the criminal records check and driver's history are checked, the Chief will allow the applicant come to Tuesday night meetings for a 45 to 60 day period. After this period, upon good conduct, the Chief Officer will consult with the line officers in the department. If a favorable recommendation is made the Chief will present the applicant to the Board of Directors for final approval.
Probationary Period- After approval from the Board of Directors, the applicant will become a probationary firefighter for a period of one year. During this one year period, the firefighter can not be certified to drive apparatus or be a first responder. The firefighter will largely only be allowed to observe until they are properly trained. They must complete 10 firefighter classes totaling over 100 hours of training within the year period. These classes must be completed before they can participate in interior structural firefighting, respond to mutual aid calls, or participate in live fire training.
Full Firefighter Status- After the probationary period, if all requirements are met, the firefighter will be a full member. He or she will be allowed to be certified as an apparatus driver after Emergency Vehicle Driver's Class, Pump Operations class, and inter departmental training is complete. Firefighters are then eligible to be trained at the EMT level and become a First Responder.
Membership is limited to:
40 Firefighters, 10 Junior Firefighters, and 10 First Responders.
Being a Volunteer firefighter is very demanding and time consuming. It is not for everyone and not everyone can do it. All members of Brendletown Fire and Rescue realize this and will help any new recruit become successful if they are willing to learn and follow the rules of the fire department.
If you have any questions, please contact Chief Black.
